Using Wikis
Many schools are using wikis or blogs to motivate students and encourage discussion about class topics. Teachers set up wikis and pose questions that students can respond to from home. Responses are voluntary and monitored by the teacher for appropriateness. One teacher explained that wikis are used building wide in her middle school. The school found that in one night, a wiki set up for 100 students received 600 posts. In Irene's words, "That's a lot of reading and writing going on." When one of the math teachers had not posted a new problem for her math class to solve, the students decided to come up with their own. I'm sure you can see the value, not only as a communication tool, but also for critical thinking opportunities across the curriculum.
